Even when their hands were withdrawn to the tops of the chairs, a foot from the table, it still moved. The table was carefully examined, turned upside down and taken apart, to satisfy all those present that no machinery had been involved. ‘After trial by every detective test they could devise,’ they had been convinced that a force was involved ‘sufficient to set in motion heavy substances, without contact of material connection of any kind between such substances and the body of any person present’; that sounds could be made in the same way; and that the force was ‘frequently directed by intelligence’.

A second group had similar results, and also reported one unusual test. They had asked sceptics to join the seance when it was in full flow, with a view to eliminating the possibility that all those involved might be under some mesmeric influence-as somebody coming in from outside presumably would not be. It had made no difference; the effects had continued. The remaining group, though they had held fewer meetings, felt that the evidence was strong enough to rebut Carpenter’s notion that unconscious muscular pressure could have been responsible for the movements they had witnessed.

In all, more than ten witnesses claimed to have seen levitations of people or heavy objects; heard musical instruments playing without being touched; and seen red hot coals held without pain. Eight had been provided by the medium with precise information of a kind that nobody present could have known, and which they had not known themselves but had found on inquiry to be correct. Six had received accurate advance information about future events. There were also examples of objects, flowers or fruit, appearing in a closed room; of visions in crystal balls; and of elongations. The three sub-committee reports, the committee concluded, substantially corroborated each other, appearing to establish certain propositions:
